Housing for participants and faculty will be provided by The Athens Centre. The Centre’s studio apartments are located in the residential Mets area of Athens just five minutes walk from the Centre itself where all of the Institute’s lectures and seminars will be held. Mets is a very central area of the city, and the studios are close to supermarkets, tavernas, cafes, bakeries and neighborhood squares.

The area of Mets is only a 15 minute walk from the heart of the city in Syntagma (Constitution) Square, where the Parliament is located.  There is also a tram, which stops close by and goes on to Syntagma. Also close by are the National Gardens and the Panathenaic Stadium, where the classical Athenian Games took place 2500 years ago, and where the first modern Olympics were held in 1896. There is a running track above the stadium which is open to the public for those who would like the thrill of running (or walking) in an ancient stadium.

All studios are air-conditioned, have overhead fans, free wifi, and a weekly cleaning service. The studios consist of one large room with two beds, desks, chairs, tables, bookcases, and large closets. They have a bathroom and small kitchen area and a balcony. The kitchen is equipped with the usual cutlery, dishes, pots and pans, a small electric stove with a small oven, refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker, and an electric kettle for heating water. Some of the apartments have washing machines. Additional laundry facilities are located on the premises, including a washing machine that can be used without charge. There is also a coin laundry a few minutes walk from the apartments.

Housing for participants will cost approximately €560 per person for doubles, €1,000 for singles. This includes utilities, wifi, taxes, common building expenses, and cleaning/sheet changing once a week. With your approval upon acceptance into the Institute, approximately $775 (for a double) or $1,375 (for a single) will be deducted from your $3,300 stipend to cover your preferred housing option; the exact amount will depend on the exchange rate at the time. Housing in Nafplion is included in these rates. The number of single rooms is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Please indicate if you are interested in this option.

Participants’ stipends, minus the housing fee, will be dispersed in one payment no later than 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the Institute.

You are welcome to travel to Athens with a spouse or partner, children, and/or family members, however the arrangements for housing, travel and other amenities in this case will be entirely in your hands. Please note that NEH policy specifies that guests of Summer Scholars are not to take part in any Institute activities. Finally, keep in mind that the Institute constitutes a full-time commitment for the four weeks in question, and Institute activities may run well into the evening.
